Why Your Child Should Continue to Swim in The Winter

educational to swim in the winter

Summer is over. We are getting late in Fall and close to Winter. Unfortunately, many parents take their children and move their activities away from the swimming lessons they’ve had all Summer long and move them towards soccer, football, and piano lessons. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with these other activities, but children should continue to swim in the Winter season. Here are the reasons why.

Reasons to Swim in The Winter Season

Health – Swimming is one of the healthiest sports. Your child’s total body gets exercised when they are swimming – arms, legs, chest, lungs, etc.. This exercise stimulates their appetite and their immune system. Just find an indoor, heated pool.

Skill Improvement and Retention – Continuing to swim will improve a child’s swimming skills. All swim instructors have seen how much a child has forgotten if they discontinue their lessons during the Winter months. A child that has not continued to swim in the winter months will waste training time when they do start again. They have lost confidence. A child that continues to improve their skills during Winter is far ahead.

Improves a Child’s Mood – Swimming is a stress reliever. The exercise helps the child’s body to release a chemical called endorphins. It makes the child feel good and improves their mood. The child is likely to be less disruptive at home.

Swimming is Likely to Help Your Child Be Smarter – Swimming helps brain development. It will improve their motor skills, their concentration, and their academic performance. Take your child away from swimming and your likely to see the difference.

Safety – Drowning is the #1 killer of children between the ages of 1 – 4 and the #2 killer of children between 5 – 9 years of age. Their swim instructor will teach them the skills they need to be safe when they are around water, but if they discontinue for the winter, they will regress and forget those safety skills. If they continue swimming, they are more likely to remember those skills.
